Herbert W. Chilstrom

Herbert W. Chilstrom (born October 18, 1931 in Litchfield (Minnesota) , † January 19, 2020 in Green Valley (Arizona) ) was an American Evangelical Lutheran clergyman . He was the first Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America .

Life

Chilstrom, whose ancestors came from Sweden as immigrants , studied theology at Augsburg University , Augustana Seminary and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, as well as at Princeton Theological Seminary . He later obtained a Doctor of Education from New York University .

He has pastored various Lutheran congregations in Minnesota : Pelican Rapids , Elizabeth, and St. Peter, Minnesota . From 1962 to 1970 he taught as professor and dean at Luther College in Teaneck , New Jersey . In 1976 he became bishop of the Minnesota Synod of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). When different Lutheran churches merged to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), he was elected as their first Presiding Bishop (leading bishop). He held this office until his retirement in 1995. He was succeeded by H. George Anderson .
