Herbert Werner (theologian)

Herbert Werner (born March 24, 1902 in Birkenfeld / Thuringia ; † May 16, 1992 in Waldsolms ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran pastor , member of the Confessing Church (BK), persecuted by the Nazi regime and professor of practical theology .

Life

Werner studied Protestant theology after obtaining his university entrance qualification . After passing the exam, he was accepted into the vicariate of the Thuringian Evangelical Church and ordained pastor on September 22, 1929 . In 1934 he became pastor of the parish Kosma and the Confessing Church and its closed Dahlemitischen branch and joined the Pastors at. His friends were Helmut Gollwitzer and Erwin Groß . Because of his critical attitude towards the Nazi regime, he had several hard arguments with his German-Christian church leadership. Because he was denied another job in Thuringia, he went to Württemberg in 1939 . In 1941 he became a pastor in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen .

After the liberation from the Nazi regime , he received his doctorate in theology . In 1962 he was appointed full professor for Protestant theology and didactics of the doctrine of the faith at the University of Frankfurt / Main , Department of Education .

In addition to his work as a university lecturer, he became known in 1949 as a co-founder and one of the editors of the BK magazine “ The Voice of the Community ”.
