Herbert van Hüllen

Herbert van Hüllen (born March 6, 1910 in Krefeld ; † January 7, 1977 there ) was a German engineer , entrepreneur , industrialist and local politician ( CDU ). From 1961 to 1968 he was mayor of the city of Krefeld and from 1961 to 1976 chairman of the general association of metal industry employers' associations ( Gesamtmetall ).

Life

Herbert van Hüllen first attended a Catholic elementary school and from 1921 the Krefeld Oberrealschule (today's Fichte-Gymnasium ), which he left in 1930 with the Abitur. He then studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Karlsruhe . In 1935 he completed his studies with the academic degree of a graduate engineer , his thesis was awarded the Redtenbacher Prize. After completing his studies, van Hüllen worked in his father's medium-sized company, the Niederrheinische Maschinenfabrik Becker & van Hüllen , a family-run business. In 1937 he became operations manager, from 1939 he was personally liable partner and owner of the growing company. In the mid-1970s it ran into financial difficulties. A loan of DM 1 million, which was granted to it by colleagues from the Gesamtmetall-Verband, including Hanns Martin Schleyer , only provided relief for four weeks.

After the Second World War he was a co-founder and, since 1950, chairman of the entrepreneurship of the iron, metal and electrical industry on the left Lower Rhine and chairman of the collective bargaining commission of the association of metal industry employers in North Rhine-Westphalia. At the Krefeld Chamber of Commerce and Industry he had been a member of the plenary assembly since 1952, became a member of the executive committee in 1957 and later became vice-president of the chamber. Van Hüllen was also a member of the municipal vocational school committee and the vocational training committee of the Krefeld Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

From 1940 to 1945 van Hüllen was councilor of the city of Krefeld. In the mid-1950s he joined the CDU. In 1961 van Hüllen was elected to the city council of Krefeld and mayor of the city. He held the mayor's office from April 6, 1961 until his resignation for health reasons on May 30, 1968, and he remained councilor and deputy chairman of the CDU council group until 1975.

Van Hüllen was chairman of the general association of metal industry employers' associations from 1961 to 1976 . From 1962 he was also Vice President of the Confederation of German Employers' Associations (BDA). In 1974 he became President of the European Association of Metal Industry Employers.

In March 1970 he was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit, in October 1975 he received the Star for the Federal Cross of Merit. The city of Krefeld awarded him the city's ring of honor in March 1975.

Van Hüllen was very interested in aviation and received an award for air sportsmen. His funeral speech was given by his companion Hanns Martin Schleyer.
