Herbie is the third short film by screenwriter , producer and director George Lucas and was produced during his student days at the University of Southern California in 1966 . The title of the film did not refer to the VW Beetle of the same name , which three years later was the focus of the Disney film A Great Beetle (1969), but referred to the aspiring jazz pianist Herbie Hancock , whose music played throughout the film is heard.
George Lucas specialized in the documentary power of a film and produced Herbie together with Paul Golding .
