Hereford and Worcester (often also County Hereford and Worcester ) was a county in the west of England and at the same time an administrative district with Worcester as the capital . It was formed in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 through the merger of Herefordshire and Worcestershire ; the area of ​​the county was 3926 square kilometers. The landscape of Hereford and Worcester was characterized by a wide lowland plain with the up to 400 meters high Malvern Hills range of hills, which formerly also formed the border between Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

To the north, Hereford and Worcester bordered Shropshire , Staffordshire and the West Midlands , to the east to Warwickshire , to the south to Gloucestershire and the county of Gwent in Wales and to the west to the Welsh county of Powys .

The largest cities in Hereford and Worcester were Worcester, Hereford , Bromsgrove and Redditch . In total, the county had around 680,000 inhabitants.

In 1998 the county was dissolved again and divided into the two counties Herefordshire and Worcestershire .
