Herfried Hoinkes (born March 9, 1916 in Bielitz, today called Bielsko-Biała and belonging to Poland; † April 4, 1975 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian meteorologist and glaciologist .

Life

Born in Silesia in 1916, after graduating from high school, he studied mathematics and physics in Königsberg (now called Kaliningrad ) for a year . In 1937 he came to Innsbruck where he studied meteorology with Arthur Wagner and received his doctorate in 1940. Habilitation at the Philosophical Faculty Innsbruck 1949 with a thesis on "The interdiural changes of pressure and temperature in the lower troposphere up to 5 km altitude and their mutual relationships in a statistical-synoptic approach". In 1956 he succeeded Prof. Albert Defant and was head of the Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics at the University of Innsbruck until his death .

He was one of the leading gazial meteorologists in the world. As early as 1939 and 1940, Hoinkes was concerned with measuring the length of alpine glaciers. He developed micrometeorological methods to better determine the heat and mass balance of a glacier. He had to solve a number of metrological problems under extreme conditions, which he succeeded in doing with the help of his dedicated staff. From 1952 he headed the intensive measurements on the Hintereisferner in the Ötztal Alps . These subtle investigations and measurements made it possible to determine and understand the heat and radiation balance of a glacier very well. He was also able to prove that the glacier wind does not have a conservative effect on the glacier ice, but rather generates heat for the glacier.

Since the mass changes of glaciers do not only depend on the microclimate in the immediate vicinity, H. Hoinkes has increasingly dealt with the connection between climatic and glacier fluctuations in his last years. Together with employees of the meteorological institute in Innsbruck, he succeeded in developing a method to infer mass changes in a glacier from measurement data from a climate station near a glacier.

But his research was not limited to alpine glaciers. During the international geophysical year 1957/58 he also took part in an Antarctic expedition to the USA, where he was entrusted with the management of a glacial-meteorological research station ( Little America III ) on the Ross Ice Shelf . In doing so, he made a significant contribution to research into the heat and radiation balance of the Antarctic .

From 1963 to 1967 Hoinkes was President of the International Commission for Snow and Ice of the International Association for Hydrology of the International Union for Geodesy and Geophysics and from 1967 to 1971 its Vice-President. After the death of Raimund von Klebelsberg , Hoinkes took over from 1970 - together with Hans Kinzl - the publication of the journal for glacier science and glacial geology .

Hoinkes was a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle , a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz .

For his special scientific achievements he was awarded the Cross of Merit for Science and Art 1st Class of the Republic of Austria . According to him, which is hoinkes peak , a rocky peak in the West Antarctica named.
