Heribert Wöckel

Heribert Wöckel (born February 25, 1932 ; died February 26, 2019 in Munich ) was a German diplomat .

Life

Heribert Wöckel studied law and political science and published some articles on constitutional and administrative law in the Bavarian administrative gazettes . He received his doctorate in 1958 from the University of Würzburg .

After completing his legal preparatory service, Wöckel went to the Foreign Service and became German Ambassador to Sri Lanka in 1977. After serving as ambassador to Syria, Senegal and Colombia, he became German ambassador to Peru in 1994. In 1996 he was one of the hostages in the Japanese embassy in Lima who were captured by the opposition Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru (MRTA). He was released as one of the negotiators after two days. Wöckel retired in 1997.
