history
The Herkenfeld settlement takes its name from the name of the “ Gewannenfeld ” , which is recorded in the original cadastre in the area of today's street Herkenfelder Weg .
etymology
The meaning of the determiner is not clear. It can be derived from a personal name Herger or Herico , then the field name would refer to the ownership structure. The name can also refer to the Middle High German erke (= bright, shiny), in which case it was a water-containing field with a shiny surface.
