Herman Han (baptized July 22, 1574 in Neisse , Silesia , Crown Bohemia ; died between December 18, 1627 and March 22, 1628 in Konitz , Polish-Prussia ) was a Silesian painter in Danzig and Polish-Prussia.

Life

The father Herman Han was a painter and created, among other paintings in Brieg (Brzeg). The son probably trained with his father, but it is not known whether he went to the Netherlands , Italy or Prague afterwards .

A first presumed painting by him in Polish Prussia is known from 1597. In 1599 Han married in Gdansk. In 1612 he and other artists applied for the formation of a painters' guild in the city and became one of their assessors. In 1614 he received citizenship in Danzig.

Herman Han painted mainly for monasteries such as Oliva and Pelplin . In 1622 the Hochstrieß estate near Danzig was given to him as a fief by the Oliva monastery. In order to be relieved of the duties on top, he painted three altarpieces for the monastery. From around 1623 Herman Han lived in Konitz (Chojnice).

His will of December 18, 1627 has been preserved. On March 22, 1628 he was described as deceased. Han was buried in the city church of Johannes Beheading von Konitz.

King Stephen Bathory and the burning Oliva Monastery

Hermann Han created paintings for churches, especially in monasteries, and portraits of contemporary and historical personalities, such as Polish kings, abbots, donors in churches and others.

His painting style is influenced by Dutch, Italian and Prague models. With his contrasting light and dark, Herman Han shaped the Danzig painting of his time. The motifs are strongly Catholic, humanistic or allegorical elements are almost completely absent.
