Hermann Alfred Raddatz

Hermann Alfred Raddatz (born April 14, 1906 in Liegnitz , Lower Silesia , † December 23, 1962 in Düsseldorf ) was a German sculptor and painter .

Life

After finishing school, Raddatz studied sculpture, wall painting and modeling at the crafts and arts school in Breslau from 1921 to 1926 with Gebhard Utinger and Bruno Zschau. At the same time he began studying painting at the Wroclaw Academy of Arts and Crafts . In 1926 he was awarded the Rome Prize of the Prussian Academy of Arts as the best sculptor . From 1926 to 1930 he studied in the master's studio at the Dresden Art Academy and was a master student and assistant to Karl Albiker . From 1930 to 1940 he worked as a freelancer in Dresden , where he became a member of the Dresden Secession in 1932 and a board member of the Dresden Artists' Association. A reputation he leaned at the Breslau Academy from 1937th His monuments Chopin in Dresden and Bergmann und Aufbruch ( monument of work ) in Zwickau were dismantled and melted down in 1943. In 1945, the family's house and studio on Bodenbacher Strasse and all of his sculptures were destroyed by the bombing of Dresden . Only a few works in museum ownership have been preserved.

In 1945 Raddatz dared to make a new artistic start with painting and in 1948 moved to Oberstdorf . From 1949 to 1962 he lived in a former paper mill on Schwarzbach in Wittlaer ( Düsseldorf-Einbrungen ). Raddatz was a member of the Malkasten artists 'association , the Rhenish Secession and the artists' guild . He died in Düsseldorf in 1962.
