Hermann Backhaus (agricultural scientist)
Hermann Christian Dietrich Backhaus (born January 7, 1817 on the Selbach domain in the Principality of Waldeck ; † February 21, 1901 in Görlitz ) was a German agricultural scientist and politician.
Life
Backhaus was the son of the conductor Heinrich Christian Friedrich Backhaus and his wife Amalie Conradine nee Schultze. He married on July 22, 1860 in Hann. Münden Cleone Emilie Bertha Bauermeister.
Backhaus studied history and philosophy since 1837, first at the University of Bonn , then at the University of Jena , where he received his PhD in 1840. phil. received his doctorate. After the March Revolution he was politically active. From 1849 to 1851 he was a member and president of the state parliament of the principalities of Waldeck and Pyrmont . In 1848 he was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly for Waldeck . In 1855 he got a job as a senior teacher at the agricultural college in Beberbeck in Hesse. From 1860 to 1871 he was tenant of a manor in Silesia.
In 1872 Backhaus accepted a call to the University of Kiel . He took over the newly established chair for agricultural studies. With limited resources, he founded a small agricultural university institute, where he mainly carried out seed studies and germination tests. He gave lectures on agricultural production, farm management and methods of soil analysis. In 1891 he was given leave of absence for health reasons and in 1894 he was released from duties. His successor in office was his long-time assistant and colleague Hermann Rodewald .
His daughter Elly married Paul Jörs in 1898 .
