Hermann Degering (born December 20, 1866 in Peine , † January 12, 1942 in Münster ) was a German librarian .

Life

Hermann Degering, the son of a businessman, studied Classical Philology and German at the Universities of Göttingen and Berlin . After receiving his doctorate in Erlangen (1893), he lived for seven years as a private scholar and worked on a historical-critical edition of the Roman specialist writer Vitruvius , which he did not complete.

In 1900 Degering joined the academic library service in Bonn. On behalf of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin , he participated in the inventory of manuscripts in the Prussian libraries. Since many manuscripts offered Middle and Early New High German literary texts that were not or little known until then, Degering found a new field of work in German studies. From 1902 to 1908 he worked at the University Library in Münster , then at the Berlin State Library , where he joined the manuscript department in 1911. From 1922 until his retirement (1932) he was director of the manuscript department.

Degering's library work corresponded to a lively publication activity. He published numerous new finds in text editions and annotated directories, as well as philological and codicological studies.
