Hermann E. Ott (born May 15, 1961 in Münster ) is a German lawyer , environmental scientist and politician from Alliance 90 / The Greens .

Since September 2018 he has been building the German office in Berlin for the international environmental law organization ClientEarth. He was previously an environmental scientist at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy and from 2009 to 2013 a member of the Bundestag for his party. Since 2016 he has been an honorary professor at the University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde and an honorary member of the board of directors of the German Nature Conservation Association .

After studying politics and law in Munich, London and Berlin, Ott completed his legal clerkship at the European Commission in Brussels in the environmental sector, in Nairobi at the Ozone Secretariat of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and in Otto Schily's office . The topic of his doctoral thesis in 1997 was the environmental regime in international law .

Professional background

From 1988 to 1990, Ott was a research fellow at the Institute for Political Science, Constitutional and Administrative Law and the Institute for International Law, European Law and Foreign Public Law in Berlin. From 1992 to 1994 he worked as a freelance lawyer , where he was a permanent employee of the law firm Schily, Becker, Geulen. In 1994 he became project manager of the climate policy department at the Wuppertal Institute, and in 1998 provisional head of the climate policy department. From November 2000 to June 2001 he worked in the planning staff of the Foreign Office. In 2001 he became director of the climate policy department of the Wuppertal Institute and in May 2004 head of the Berlin offices.

In the 2009 Bundestag election , Hermann E. Ott obtained a mandate as a member of the German Bundestag from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen on the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia . As a candidate for a direct mandate, he ran in the Wuppertal I constituency . In the federal election on September 22, 2013 , Ott lost his parliamentary mandate. Ott was climate policy spokesman for the parliamentary group , a member of the petitions and environment committee and the growth enquete .

Hermann E. Ott then returned to the Berlin office of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy until August 2018. Since September 1, 2018, he has been building the German office in Berlin for the international environmental law organization ClientEarth.

Ott has been on the Presidium of the German Nature Conservation Ring since 2016 .
