Hermann Fischer (born November 22, 1873 in Magdeburg , † August 24, 1940 in Berlin ) was a German banker and politician.

Life

Fischer studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Universität . He joined the Corps Suevia Strasbourg, which later elected him an honorary member. After completing his doctorate, he worked as a lawyer in Cologne from 1899 , where he worked, among other things, as legal advisor for the Schaaffhausen'schen Bankverein . In 1901 he was one of the founders of the Corps Hansea Cologne , an honorary member of which he was later elected. In 1907 he became managing director of the international drilling company in Erkelenz and in 1912 a member of the board of the Schaafhausen'schen Bankverein. After the bank association was taken over by Disconto-Gesellschaft in 1914, he also became a partner in Disconto. After serving in the First World War , he became a consultant for the iron and steel industry in the Prussian War Ministry in 1916 and then an official in the Reich Office for Economic Demobilization .

Fischer resigned from both the Schaafhausen'schen Bankverein and the Disconto-Gesellschaft in 1919 and turned to politics. He was one of the founding members of the German Democratic Party (DDP) and was a member of the Reichstag (Weimar Republic) from 1920 to 1930 . From 1922 to 1933 he was President of the Hansabund . He was briefly taken into protective custody during the Nazi era and was under surveillance as a pacifist .

From 1920 to 1929 he was a member of the supervisory board of Disconto-Gesellschaft. After the merger with Deutsche Bank in 1929, he was a member of the supervisory board of the merged institute until 1931. In 1931 he joined the Society of Friends .
