Hermann Thoms
Hermann Friedrich Maria Thoms (born March 20, 1859 in Neustrelitz ; † November 28, 1931 in Berlin ) was a pharmacist and university professor in Berlin. He is considered the founder of scientific pharmacy in Germany.
Life
After a pharmacist teaching in Berlin Thoms studied in Berlin , Jena and Würzburg pharmacy. After receiving his doctorate in 1886, he was administrator of the court pharmacy in Weimar until 1889, and from 1889 to 1893 scientific director of a chemical factory.
In 1895 he was at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University habilitated and was a lecturer . Appointed associate professor for pharmaceutical chemistry in 1900, he established the Pharmaceutical University Institute in Berlin from 1900–1902. Full professor from 1920 , he headed it until 1927.
From July 1923 to March 1924, he and his wife went on a trip around the world, on which he learned new cultural and scientific experiences.
In 1931, shortly before his death, he was awarded the Hanbury Gold Medal by the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain for his services to research into drugs.
As early as 1890 he founded the German Pharmaceutical Society . In 1894/95 he edited the Apotheker-Zeitung. Since 1927 he was a member of the Leopoldina .
He was a member of the RSC-Corps Cheruscia EAH.
Resting place
During their lifetime, Thoms and his wife Luise had already chosen a burial site in the cemetery in Lutherstadt Eisenach. The location of the hereditary burial near the cemetery chapel in the north of the city afforded a direct view of the Wartburg. The burial on the final resting place took place in December 1931. Later the Pharmaceutical Society of the GDR (PhG-DDR) took care of the grave.
