Hermann Goehausen, son of Brakeler citizen Franz Goehausen and Catharina Heistermann, studied 1610-1619 jurisprudence at the Universities of Leipzig , Giessen and Marburg and received his doctorate in 1620 at the University of Rinteln . Here at the Lutheran University of Alma Ernestina , he taught as a professor of law from 1622 until his death. He was the first holder of the professorship of the Wippermann-Heistermann'sche Family Foundation with a professorship in Rinteln. His successor in this family professorship was Engelbert Wippermann .

Goehausen's first larger work, Decisio Trium Quaestionum Usu frequentium , published in Rinteln in 1629 deals with three questions from the context of the witch trials : 1. Whether the “cold water test” is reliable and legitimate (here Goehausen proves to be in the tradition of Wilhelm Adolf Scribonius standing). 2. Whether the judge should subject a person reported to him to torture. 3. Whether the reports of night witch meetings are true. Goehausen never seemed to have any doubts about any of the three.

In his work PROCESSUS JURIDICUS contra sagas & veneficos , published in Rinteln in 1630 . That is: Legal Proceß / How one should proceed against fiends and magical persons is the particularly hard attitude expressed, which corresponded to the Rinteln law faculty in the witch trials, especially by Goehausen. As a member of the Spruchkollegium, Goehausen often used cases, evidence and illustrative material from Rinteln's Spruchpraxis in his statements. The book is not the only one on the theory of witchcraft, but it is by far the most important printed article on the subject. In response to Goehausen published Friedrich von Spee , anonymous only a year later its refutation Cautio criminalis that in the same Rintelner Universitätsdruckerei of Petrus Lucius appeared.

His sister Katharina Cothmann, married to Dietrich Cothmann, from one of the oldest and most respected families in County Lippe, was executed as a witch in Lemgo in 1654 . Her son Hermann Cothmann , for his part, became known as the "witch mayor" through extensive witch hunts in Lemgo. Her brother-in-law was the well-known lawyer and Rostock professor Ernst Cothmann .
