Ernst Cothmann , also: Kotman Cotmann, Cothmannus, (born December 6, 1557 in Lemgo , † April 13, 1624 in Rostock ) was a German lawyer and legal scholar.

Life

After studying at the University of Helmstedt and the University of Marburg , he moved to the University of Rostock in 1581 , where he received his doctorate in law on October 8, 1584 . On June 21, 1585, he went to the University of Wittenberg , completed his habilitation in Rostock in 1586, became assessor at the court in 1587 and later also in the consistory. In 1595 he took over a professorship in law at the Rostock Academy and in 1603 was also "Rath and Canzler" of the dukes Ulrich of Mecklenburg-Güstrow and Johann Albrecht II of Mecklenburg-Güstrow .

He came from one of the oldest, most respected families in County Lippe. His brother Johann Cothmann was a well-known diplomat. His brother Dietrich Cothmann was with Katharina Cothmann, geb. Goehausen, married, who was executed as a witch in Lemgo in 1654 . Her son Hermann Cothmann , for his part, became known as the "witch mayor" through extensive witch hunts in Lemgo.

The brother of his sister-in-law Katharina was Hermann Goehausen , professor at the Lutheran University Alma Ernestina in Rinteln from 1622 to 1632 , and author of the “ Processus juridicus contra sagas et veneficos ”, the most important book on the witchcraft of the 17th century.
