Hermann Grote (composer)
Hermann Grote (born January 29, 1885 in Hohegeiß in the Harz Mountains ; † March 21, 1971 there ) was a pedagogue and composer . He became particularly well-known as the composer and lyricist of the “ Lower Saxony song ” written in Braunschweig around 1926 .
Life
Grote first attended the teacher training college in Wolfenbüttel and then from 1906 worked at elementary and secondary schools in Wolfenbüttel and Braunschweig. In 1927 he passed the examination to become a high school music teacher at the Berlin Academy for Church and School Music as a primary school teacher . From 1929 Grote worked as a music teacher at the Braunschweiger Lessing School, later at the Gauß School . In addition, he worked as a composer and led a large number of choirs in Braunschweig, B. the largest in the city, the "Volkschor", as well as the MIAG choir. He led this people's choir in the German Workers' Association from 1919 and was a member of the SPD around 1929 . In May 1933 he joined the NSDAP . In 1945 he was suspended from school service and denazified as a follower in 1948 .
After his retirement in 1957, Grote returned to his birthplace Hohegeiß (today part of Braunlage ), where he headed the local men's choir until 1964.
Since the end of November 2009, a bronze statue in front of the Hohegeisser Heimatmuseum has been reminding him. At its inauguration, Braunlager Mayor Stefan Grote ( SPD ) emphasized that his namesake “is by no means to be classified politically 'right-wing'”.
