Hermann Grupe (Author)

Hermann Grupe (born November 23, 1881 in Wellingen (today the municipality of Belm ), † September 17, 1949 in Bad Salzuflen ) was a Low German author.

Live and act

Hermann Grupe was born in Wellingen as the son of a farmer. He received his primary school teacher training at the teachers seminar in Osnabrück . Until 1907 he worked as a primary school teacher in Wielen ( Grafschaft Bentheim ), Bennien und Gaste . From 1907 he studied German and history in Berlin and Jena for teaching at secondary schools. After working in Herzberg , he finally returned to Osnabrück in 1912 and taught at the Backhaus Middle School there for over thirty years. His political activities in the citizen board of Osnabrück ended abruptly in 1933. But from 1946 until his death in 1949 he was active again as a member of the first city council of Osnabrück after 1945.

From the beginning, however, his great passion was the Low German language. Despite all the political imponderables, he never forgot his literary work. Several small and large works in Low German were created between 1926 and 1945, here is a selection:

In Osnabrück, Hiärm-Grupe-Strasse in the desert district was named after him. His grave can be found in the Heger cemetery in Osnabrück .
