Herman Jan de Vleeschauwer

Herman Jan Melania de Vleeschauwer (born July 9, 1899 in Dendermonde , East Flanders , † August 15, 1986 in Pretoria , Transvaal ) was a Belgian philosopher and historian.

Life

The student of the important historian Henri Pirenne , received his doctorate magna cum laude in 1923 and was professor of logic, metaphysics and the history of modern philosophy at the University of Ghent in 1925 (until 1945) and, after his emigration to South Africa, from 1951 to 1966 at the University of South Africa in Pretoria .

The emigration was actually an escape: De Vleeschauwer had shown himself to be very friendly to Germany and carried out Nazi propaganda in publications. The memberships in the Flemish national association VNV and especially in the extremist group DeVlag (Duitsch-Vlaamsche Arbeidsgemeenschap) were calculated later. And he had benefited from the German occupation. De Vleeschauwer received on November 16, 1940 the highest position in the country in the field of higher education. After the war he was also accused of an arson attack in the Ministry of Education. He was sentenced to death in absentia by a Belgian military court in 1946.

The doctoral thesis dealt with the then famous Rudolf Eucken , who had frequented the Vleeschauwers' house during World War I, but Immanuel Kant was the first focus of his internationally recognized work. Well-known names like Leibniz were added, but also little- known names like the occassionalist Flemish philosopher of the 17th century, Arnold Geulincx . At the University of South Africa in Pretoria he was Professor of Philosophy and in the Department of Librarianship and Bibliography. From 1955 he published the library science journal Mousaion .

De Vleeschauwer authored over thirty monographs and books and over 300 articles. The University of Glasgow awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1937 .
