Hermann Sticher
Hermann Ludwig Sticher (born January 23, 1927 in Tübingen , † December 19, 2014 in Nürtingen ) was Bishop of the United Methodist Church (UMC) in Germany .
Live and act
Sticher grew up in Mühlacker . After passing high school, he began training as an interpreter . From 1947 to 1953 he worked as an interpreter, translator and press officer at the state commissioner for North-Württemberg-North Baden and then at the American Consulate General in Stuttgart. In 1953/1954 he was a congregation intern in the then Evangelical Community (EG) in the Nürtingen district. Between 1954 and 1957 he studied Protestant theology at the preacher's seminary of the EG in Reutlingen and then worked as a pastor at the Zionskirche in Ulm and Langenau until 1959 . His ordination took place in Heidelberg in 1958. Further stations as parish pastor were from 1959 to 1962 in Herrenalb- Loffenau and then until 1966 at the Erlöserkirche in Karlsruhe . Between 1966 and 1974 Sticher was superintendent in the Reutlingen district before he took over a parish office in Ludwigsburg again until 1977 . In 1977 Sticher was elected Bishop of the United Methodist Church in Germany and West Berlin as the successor to Jakob Karl Ernst Sommer . He was followed in 1989 by Walter Klaiber .
He worked as conference secretary in the areas of youth work, youth work, Christian education, ministerial authority and leisure work and was a delegate of the general conferences between 1966 and 1996. He was a member of the association committees for the union of the Evangelical Community and the Methodist Bishops' Church into the Methodist Church, between 1972 and 1976 member of the General Council on Ministries of the General Conference, from 1980 to 1988 member of the General Board of Discipleship, from 1977 to 1989 member of the Executive Committee of the World Council of Methodist Churches from 1981 to 1986 its presidium. From 1986, Sticher was chairman of the program committee for the 1991 World Conference in Singapore and in 1999 a founding member of "The Honorable Order of Jerusalem and World Methodist Council". From 1973 to 1976 he was the first chairman of the Working Group of Christian Churches (ACK) in Baden-Württemberg and vice chairman of the ACK in the FRG and West Berlin. He worked in the committee for ecumenical diakonia and distribution committee “Bread for the World” and was its chairman from 1982 to 1989. Sticher was the deputy chairman of the Evangelical Mission in Hamburg and a member of the presidium of the Association of Evangelical Free Churches (VEF), where he was chairman for a period.
Sticher worked between 1959 and 1963 as editor of the youth group magazine "Die Fackel", which was published by the Evangelical Community together with the Episcopal Methodist Church. He was a member of the editorial board of the journals Ökumenische Rundschau and Das missionäre Wort and the ecumenical devotional book With the Bible through the year .
During his retirement in 1993, Sticher was visiting professor for one year at Wesley University Nebraska in Lincoln (Nebraska) , which awarded him an honorary doctorate on May 14, 1994 (Doctor of Divinity - DD).
Private
Sticher married Lisa Henzler in 1958. The couple had three sons and had lived in Nürtingen- Raidwangen since retiring in 1989 .
