Hermann Marsian

Hermann Wilhelm Marsian (born March 5, 1902 in Hamburg , † February 27, 1970 in Neumünster ) was a German manufacturer.

Training and first work experience

Hermann Marsian was a son of the chief police inspector Johann Fr. K. Marsian (* 1860 in Glückstadt ; † 1924 in Hamburg) and his wife Anna F., née Blanke (* 1860 in Tangermünde ; † 1952 in Hamburg). The family's ancestors were Huguenots who moved to Glückstadt via Danzig at the beginning of the 18th century.

Marsian, who had six older siblings, graduated from high school in 1919 and then joined the von Bülow Freikorps. Instead of a civil servant career, which three of his brothers went through in addition to his father, he looked for an apprenticeship with a cloth merchant against his father's will. After completing his apprenticeship, in 1922 he fulfilled his wish to travel overseas and in 1922 boarded a ship for Java . He had earned the necessary funds through speculation on the stock exchange. In 1928 he married Hedwig Bartram (born January 28, 1900 in Neumünster) on the island. The couple had two daughters.

After a successful time as a merchant, Marsian moved to Berlin in 1933 , where he worked as a textile merchant. During the years of World War II he served as a press officer in Brussels . After the death of his first wife on March 26, 1941, he married Dörte Wachholtz on October 27, 1945 in Neumünster, who was born there on February 21, 1922. From this marriage three daughters and one son were born.

Build your own company

In 1947 Marsian opened a company and initially produced clothing for men. A short time later, he changed the range to women's coats and costumes, which he sold under the brand name "MARIS". The products quickly gained notoriety due to their high quality, which was decisive for the success of Hermann Marsian Bekleidungsindustrie GmbH .

In 1951, Marsian relocated the company headquarters to newly built, contemporary premises. In 1961 he opened a branch in Eckernförde and in 1964 the subsidiary Maressa Maschen-Industrie . In 1965 a new main MARIS plant was added in Neumünster, which at the time was considered one of the largest and most modern German companies for the production of women's outerwear. In 1970 the group employed more than 2000 people.

social commitment

Marsian was considered an important and skilled entrepreneur who was interested in the social needs of his employees. It offered very good working conditions, set up a company kindergarten, a benefit fund and company welfare and offered a company pension scheme. From 1956 to 1968 he volunteered as a commercial judge at the district court in Kiel , for which he received a medal of honor. From 1959 to 1963 he was a member of the Neumünster City Council. From 1954 to 1961 he was an assessor at the Schleswig Regional Administrative Court .

Marsian belonged to the German-Indonesian Society , the East Asian Association , the Presidium of the Federal Association of the German Clothing Industry and the board of the Schleswig-Holstein University Society.

In 1968 Marsian was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Order of Merit.

Development of the Marsian group of companies

After the company's founder died in early 1970, the Marsian works existed until 1976. The closure was due to foreign competitors who could produce more cheaply, but also due to the collection, which was considered classically conservative and out of date.
