Hermann Meeths
Johann Friedrich Hermann Meeths (* 23. February 1843 in Lübeck ; † 17th September 1907 ibid ) was a German plumber, the first foreman of Lübeckischen Guild of Plumbers and member of the Lübeck citizenship.
Life
After completing his apprenticeship as a plumber , Meeths went on the usual years of travel at the time . These were interrupted in 1866 when he took part in the German War as part of the Lübeck contingent . When he returned to his hometown, he later settled down as a master craftsman and was the owner of house no. 239 on the market for several years . Numbers 234–240 were demolished in 1882 for the new main post office building. He then acquired a plot of land at Holstenstrasse 12 , which he sold again when he became a reindeer .
For many years, Meeths was head master in the plumber's guild and was highly regarded by the members of the guild, both as a professional and as a person . He was elected to the Association of German Plumbers and Plumbers Guilds, which elected him to be its board member. When he expressed his wish to be released from the guild leadership in 1906, the latter appointed him honorary chief master and at the same time recognized him for the services he had provided. He also headed the trade association for several years as its chairman . At that time, the much-discussed 50th anniversary of the prestigious association was celebrated under his leadership.
Meeths developed an extensive activity in the circle of the commercial society in the last decades. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce , chairman of the trade association and, as a member of the company's board of directors, he prepared the large excursions of the society with great care.
His work, which was previously limited to the narrower professional group, expanded to include public services at the beginning of the 1880s. Since June 1881 Hermann Meeths belonged to the citizenship and was starting from 1890 member of the citizens' committee . He took part in the deliberations of the legislative bodies and was absent only due to illness. In particular, it represented the interests of the craft in a factually effective manner. As a bourgeois deputy he was with the tax authorities , in the head of the lunatic asylum , the fire health insurance fund and the fire extinguishing authority.
On September 17, 1907, the citizens' committee was on a so-called information tour on the Trave. He was also at the Ewers sand-lime brick factory on Herrenbrücke . When Meeths wanted to look at an elevator there , he stepped on a decking covered by a mixing trough. In doing so, his left leg got caught in the gearbox of the mixer.
Not to be forgotten was Meeths' sense of charity . He was on the board of directors and the Christmas committee of the “Collection Box” association. There he acted as a driving force behind the expansion of Christmas and confirmation gifts.
He has loved traveling since his youth. In the advancing age he extended this to the Orient . At a meeting of the trade association in 1905, Meeths reported on his experiences there.
