Hermann Schnell
Hermann Schnell (born September 8, 1916 in Gaienhofen (Baden); † September 7, 1999 there ) was a German chemist .
Life
Hermann Schnell studied chemistry and did his doctorate at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg under Hermann Staudinger . In 1953, after only two months at his new job in the main scientific laboratory of the Bayer plant in Uerdingen, he developed the synthesis of polycarbonate from bisphenol A and phosgene . Quickly later became head of all research work at Bayer. In 1970 Schnell received the Hermann Staudinger Memorial Medal, and in 1976 the Swinburne Award. His activities earned him over 400 of his own patents .
With the invention of polycarbonate, he founded a completely new class of plastics. Bayer had this invention patented in the same year and has been selling it under the Makrolon brand name for over 50 years . The versatility of this class of plastic is demonstrated by the many different applications: CDs, transparent roofing, lenses, automobile construction, etc.
In 1995, Hermann Schnell set up a foundation named after him at the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh) to promote young scientists in the field of macromolecular chemistry , its physical-chemical principles and its analysis.
