Hermann Schwanecke

Hermann Karl Gustav Schwanecke (born April 12, 1889 in Wernigerode , † June 17, 1974 in Freiberg ) was a German geologist and university professor.

Life

Schwanecke graduated from secondary school in Halberstadt in 1908 . He then studied mathematics and natural sciences with a focus on geology and geography at the Philipps University of Marburg , passed the oral doctoral examination on February 26, 1913 and was awarded a doctorate in 1914. phil. PhD. In October 1913 he began his military service, which went over to military service in the First World War . From 1918 he was seriously injured and had to spend two years in the hospital. In 1920 he took up an assistant position at the Geological and Paleontological Institute of the Clausthal Mining Academy .

From 1923 Schwanecke worked as a freelance geologist a. a. for the Federal Foreign Office and for the lead-zinc ore mining industry. With the beginning of the Nazi regime, it became more and more difficult for him, who was a member of the German Democratic Party from 1920 to 1927 and a member of the SPD from 1927 , to get jobs. In 1937 he finally found a job as a prospecting geologist at Rohstoff-AG in Harzgerode . He was unemployed again in 1939 and worked from 1940 as a geologist and from 1941 to 1945 as chief geologist at Preussag Oberschlesien.

He joined the SED in 1946 , went to Halle (Saale) , where he worked for a few months at the Ministry of Economics of the state government of Saxony-Anhalt and from November 1946 worked for the Saxony-Anhalt industrial plants. In 1949 the Freiberg Mining Academy appointed him full professor of geology and director of the Geological Institute. In addition, he worked until 1951 as dean of the faculty for natural sciences and complementary subjects. In 1956 he retired, although he continued teaching until 1968. In 1974 he died in Freiberg.
