Hermann Winkler (born March 3, 1924 in Duisburg , † January 21, 2009 in Gauting ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Hermann Winkler studied in Hanover and began his singing career there at the Lower Saxony State Theater . The following engagements took him to Bielefeld (1954–1958), Zurich and Cologne , where he was a permanent member of the ensemble between 1959 and 1986. In Cologne he sang in the Mozart cycle of the director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and the Kaiser in his production of "Frau ohne Schatten" by Richard Strauss . This production could also be seen at La Scala in Milan . Parallel to his Cologne engagements, Hermann Winkler had a guest contract at the Frankfurt Opera , where he took part as Ritter Blaubart in Jacques Offenbach 's operetta of the same name, directed by Walter Felsenstein. In Frankfurt he made his debut as Florestan in Beethoven'sFidelio ” with Hildegard Behrens under the conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi .

In 1964 he sang for the first time at the Bayreuth Richard Wagner Festival ("Tannhäuser"). There he appeared in “Fliegende Holländer” (Steuermann) and in 1976/1977 as “Parsifal”, which he also sang at the Salzburg Easter Festival under Herbert von Karajan. At the Salzburg Summer Festival he was Don Ottavio in Mozart's “Don Giovanni”. Under Herbert von Karajan he could be heard in Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Mahler's “Lied von der Erde” in Berlin and Tokyo.

In 1975 he worked in the film "The Flying Dutchman" with (Erik). His partners were Caterina Ligendza and Donald McIntyre. Wolfgang Sawallisch conducted it .

Hermann Winkler's repertoire ranged from the lyric Mozart roles to Wagner (title roles in “Lohengrin” and “Parsifal”), Beethoven (Florestan in “Fidelio”), Weber (Max in “Freischütz”) and Richard Strauss (Kaiser in “Frau without shadow ”, Bacchus in“ Ariadne auf Naxos ”). At the end of his career he switched to the character subject.

In 1989 he made his debut at the Zurich Opera House in the title role of Britten's “Peter Grimes”, and in 1991 at the Lower Saxony State Theater in Hanover in the title role of Pfitzner's “Palestrina”.

Guest engagements have taken him to Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Chicago, Milan, Rome, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, London and Geneva.

From 1988 he headed the opera studio in Hamburg for several years.

Hermann Winkler died at the age of 84 after a short, serious illness. He was buried in the Munich Ostfriedhof.
