Hermann von Bönninghausen , nicknamed Ajax , (born July 24, 1888 in Bocholt , † January 26, 1919 in Düsseldorf ) was a German athlete and participant in the Olympic Games in London in 1908 and in Stockholm in 1912 .

Hermann von Bönninghausen was born as the son of the medical councilor August Joseph von Bönninghausen in the Westphalian town of Bocholt and started playing sport at the local BFC in 1900 . As a football player and athlete, he was also active in later years for the Preußen Duisburg and Gymnastics Club Munich 1860 clubs. In 1907 Hermann von Bönninghausen set a new German record in the long jump with 6.56 m , which he was able to improve in the same year to 6.80 m. In 1911 he ran the 110 meter hurdles in 16.4 s, also a German record. At the Olympic Games in 1908 von Bönninghausen started in the sprint competition over 100 meters and in the long jump , in 1912 in Stockholm in the disciplines of long jump, triple jump and 110-meter hurdles .

Hermann von Bönninghausen died at the age of 30 as a result of an injury, a shot in the face, which he sustained in the First World War .
