Hermann von Littrow

Hermann von Littrow (born October 22, 1858 in Verona , † September 24, 1931 in Vienna ) was an Austrian engineer .

Life

Littrow was the grandson of the astronomer Joseph Johann von Littrow .

After graduating from high school, Littrow began studying mechanical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology . After successfully completing this course, he got a job at the Floridsdorfer Lokomotivfabrik .

After a few years Littrow switched to the state service, the kk Staatsbahnen , where he developed, among other things, the numbering scheme for locomotives of the kkStB, which was valid from 1885 and consisted only of digits. From 1885 to 1887 he was employed in Salzburg and was then promoted to the management in Vienna.

In 1893 he worked as an engineer together with Karl Gölsdorf in Bureau 3 / a (Constructions-Bureau) of the subdivision for train transport and workshop service and Lake Constance shipping in the K. k. General management of the Austrian State Railways employed. In 1894, Littrow took over the management of the train conveyance and workshop service department in Villach . Between 1900 and 1902 Littrow was entrusted with the management of Vienna's trams.

In the same year Littrow came to the management of the State Railways in Linz , where he was employed until 1905. He then moved to Trieste in the same position until 1910 . In 1911 he was promoted to director of the workshop department of the Ministry of Railways in Vienna.

Together with his colleague G. Zeh , Littrow invented the funnel firing , which - at least on secondary lines - enabled personnel savings .

Since his time at the Floridsdorfer Lokomotivfabrik, Littrow has published articles on railway history in various specialist journals. Hermann von Littrow died on September 24, 1931 in Vienna at the age of almost 73.
