Hermann von Rotteck (historian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann von Rotteck (born August 25, 1816 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † July 12, 1845 there ) was a German historian and lawyer.

Life

As the son of Karl von Rotteck , Hermann studied law, philosophy and history at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg . In 1838 he became a member of the Corps Suevia Freiburg . He received his doctorate as Dr. iur. (1840) and Dr. phil. (1841). With his father he worked on a new edition of the "General History", which he published after his death along with writings he had left behind and a life story. In addition, he wrote a “History of the Latest Period from 1814–40” and a “Picture gallery on the general history of Karl v. Rotteck «. Imbued with German idealism and the political direction of his father, the "extremely liberal" Rotteck became involved (unsuccessfully) for the opposition in the elections for the Baden Estates Assembly in 1842 . This earned him the resentment of the grand ducal state ministry , which only approved his habilitation as a private lecturer at the University of Freiburg in 1844 with a two-year delay. Already terminally ill, he died at the age of 29. He had edited many articles for the new edition of the Rotteck-Welcker State Lexicon .
