Hermes Baby is an independent community of journalists .

It was founded in Hamburg on November 23, 2019 by the seven journalists Manuel Stark, Jonas Seufert, Alexander Rupflin, Gabriel Prödl, Lisbeth Schröder, Nele Rößler and Ruth Fulterer .

The self-proclaimed “Community for Good Stories” derives its name from the legendary Hermes Baby portable typewriter. The owners of a Hermes Baby include Ernest Hemingway , John Steinbeck , Peter Härtling and Friederike Mayröcker . The latter author is said to have said that she was "married" to her typewriter.

Publications of the community appear regularly in national media such as Zeit , Spiegel , Stern , Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin , Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung , Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Deutschlandfunk .

Foundation and goal

The community was founded a year after the scandal surrounding the Spiegel editor and forger of journalistic texts, Claas Relotius, became known . In the course of the excitement about made-up stories in a journalistic medium, the use of storytelling and dramaturgy in the creation of journalistic content was also increasingly criticized. The term "beautiful writer" came up as a derogatory term, which was mainly directed against authors from corporate departments who gained their prestige primarily through a precise and sonorous language and as authors were mainly representatives for the well-told story.

The members of Hermes Baby oppose this view. Instead, they call for the means of storytelling to be seen as an opportunity to convey information in an understandable, exciting and appealing way. They counter the criticism of seduction through narratives that only knowledge of the same instruments would help to expose falsifications or kitsch . They also want to rethink journalistic publication channels in order to find their audience not only in an already established readership or audience. To this end, they are experimenting with the presentation of journalism in new forms, such as: on the theater stage, as a comic , exhibition or song.

The community is involved in youth work and designs projects together with the youth press . Individual members take on mentoring for young authors or hold seminars at universities, colleges and other educational institutions - for example the Goethe Institute , the University of Bamberg , the Reutlingen Reportage School , the State Center for Political Education Rhineland-Palatinate or the International Press Club Munich .
