Herr und Speer (also: HERR & SPEER ) are a team of authors and activists from Berlin, which consists of Vincent-Immanuel Herr and Martin Speer . Founded in 2012, the historian / sociologist Herr and the economist Speer devote themselves to a number of social and political issues, publish articles and initiate public campaigns. Herr und Speer gained particular prominence with their Free Interrail Initiative and their letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel , supported by various celebrities, on the opening of marriage in 2015. Herr und Speer also focuses on intergenerational justice , European integration and youth, democracy and gender equality . The two call themselves feminists .

Initiatives

Herr and Speer started a series of campaigns and initiatives, some of which generated considerable media and public response.

In 2012 they were part of the “Future Manifesto”, a call published in ZEIT by 11 young people under the age of 30 from six different parties with concrete policy proposals for a fairer and more sustainable future. Among others, Wolfgang Gründinger and Diana Kinnert were there.

In 2013, Herr and Speer advocated the introduction of compulsory voting in Germany in connection with a field of abstention. Over the years, both have repeatedly spoken out in favor of the demand.

In summer 2014 they founded the Young European Collective, a group of young European activists from different European countries. In autumn 2015, the group published a joint generational and European essay entitled “Who, If Not Us?”, Crowdfunded the printing and distributed 6,000 copies to young people in several European countries. The group was u. a. supported and funded by Stiftung Mercator . The German translation of the book was published in June 2017 by Verlag Droemer Knaur .

In 2015, Mr and Speer, together with the Foundation for the Rights of Future Generations , called for a youth quota to be introduced in German parties and parliaments.

In June 2015, they published an open letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel on Spiegel Online under the hashtag #EsIstZeit, demanding that a vote be held in the Bundestag to open up marriage without being forced into a parliamentary group . The letter mainly attracted attention because it was supported by top politicians from the SPD , B90 / Die Grünen , Die Linke and FDP and was also supported by various German celebrities. For example, Nena , Udo Lindenberg , Til Schweiger , Die Ärzte , Claudius Seidl , Maren Kroymann and Thomas Hitzlsperger signed the appeal. In addition, the letter has been signed by over 57,000 people in a Change.org petition to date (April 2017).

Since the summer of 2015, Herr and Speer have been campaigning for their Free Interrail proposal in various articles, radio interviews and at events: every EU citizen should get a free Interrail ticket on their 18th birthday . This should strengthen European integration and make Europe tangible for all citizens, regardless of their social, financial or national background. Since then, the proposal has been widely discussed in the media and received largely positive feedback. A survey by the ZDF Politbarometer in September 2016 showed that a majority of Germans consider this proposal to be sensible. The proposal was also taken up in the European Parliament and is supported there by MEPs from the EPP , ALDE , Greens / EFA and S&D groups . An online petition for the proposal had collected over 34,000 signatures by April 2017. After a pilot project in 2018 with 15,000 free Interrail tickets, the EU Commission plans to provide up to 700 million euros for #DiscoverEU between 2021 and 2027 , as the EU's FreeInterrail-based initiative is called.

In February 2016, Herr and Speer published a much-discussed guide to feminism for men on ZEIT Online . Both are supporters of the UN HeForShe campaign and have been German ambassadors for HeForShe since 2018.

Shortly before the referendum on whether the United Kingdom would remain in the EU in June 2016, the two launched the call #EuropeLovesUK, which was supported by over 57,000 people and shared on Twitter by the successful author Joanne K. Rowling, among others .

For the 2017 federal election, Herr and Speer called on their generation in ZEIT to vote and started an election flash mob. The activists propose to the new federal government the introduction of a 500 euro education voucher, the so-called "future package", for all young people on their 18th birthday.
