Herr calls for a greater social interest in dealing with history and explains why historical knowledge is important for current developments and political decisions. In the text he refers explicitly to Friedrich Schiller's inaugural lecture on universal history at the University of Jena and concludes with the words: “In a globalized, networked and rushed world, it is worthwhile to think all the more about the advantages of Schiller's understanding of history. Because if we want to know where we are going, we should know where we are from. "

In an article for The European magazine in 2015, Herr took up these theses and examined the connection between violence and social progress.
