Martin Speer (born September 14, 1986 in Leipzig ) is a German activist, economist and political communicator.

He devotes himself to a range of social and political issues, publishes articles in newspapers and initiates political campaigns. He became known as part of the author and activist team Herr & Speer with the FreeInterrail Initiative, the open letter #EsIstZeit and the commitment to intergenerational justice . His work focuses on European integration , democracy , intergenerational and gender equality .

Political positions

Intergenerational justice

Speer advocates a more intergenerational society and greater visibility of the young generation in the political arena. He advocates a youth quota for lists in political parties, calls for a lowering of the voting age and demands from his generation greater political commitment and higher voter turnout. He rates the pension at 63 as “a step backwards in an aging society”. In the Maybrit Illner talk show for the 2013 federal election, he criticized the political denial of reality in dealing with demographic change and called Germany a “republic of future atheists”. The FAZ describes him as a "pensioner scare".

Together with a group of activists, he filed a complaint with the Federal Constitutional Court and is contesting the 2013 federal election because no people under the age of 18 were allowed to vote. 13 million minors have been denied the right to vote. The Second Senate of the Federal Constitutional Court rejected the election review complaint in 2016.

equality

Speer is committed to reducing discrimination against sexual minorities. In 2013 he published the open letter Establishes what is equal and calls for the full opening of marriage to same-sex couples. The letter was co-signed by intellectuals such as Martin Walser , Günter Grass , Angelika Taschen and Roger Willemsen . Spiegel Online calls it a "remarkable writing". Right-wing conservative circles sharply criticized Speer for the text and accused him of "destroying the marriage."

In July 2015, Speer and Vincent-Immanuel Herr wrote an open letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel . Under the hashtag #EsIstZeit, the activists are calling for a vote to open up marriage without being forced into a faction . Top politicians from the SPD , B90 / Die Grünen , Die Linke and FDP signed the letter, as did over 100 German celebrities from art, culture, science and the media, including Nena , Udo Lindenberg , Til Schweiger , Die Ärzte , Jan-Josef Liefers and Claudius Seidl , Maren Kroymann , Thomas Hitzlsperger . Around 58,000 people joined the project on the petition platform change.org .

European Integration

Speer is committed to strengthening European cohesion with various initiatives.

He sees European civil society as the “engine of a new, citizen-oriented and democratic Europe”.

#EuropeLovesUK

In 2016, he and Vincent-Immanuel Herr addressed the British people with the open letter #EuropeLovesUK and encouraged Great Britain to remain in the European Union. 57,000 people signed the letter online. Hundreds of people took part in the action on social networks, including bestselling author JKRowling.

#FreeInterrail

Together with Vincent-Immanuel Herr, Speer developed the idea of giving every EU citizen a free Interrail ticket for their 18th birthday on a European research trip in 2014 and thus giving all young people the opportunity - regardless of their social, financial or national background - to get to know and appreciate Europe. The proposal, also known as #FreeInterrail , was widely discussed in the media and politically across Europe and was largely received positively. A survey by the ZDF Politbarometer in September 2016 shows that a majority of Germans consider this proposal to be sensible. The proposal was also taken up in the European Parliament , where it is supported by MEPs from the EPP , ALDE , Greens / EFA and S&D groups . The European Commission calls it an "excellent" idea, but is still hesitant to fully implement it.

After a pilot project in 2018 with 15,000 free Interrail tickets, the EU Commission plans to provide up to 700 million euros for #DiscoverEU between 2021 and 2027 , as the EU's FreeInterrail-based initiative is called.

Young European Collective

Speer is co-founder of the European team of authors and activists The Young European Collective . The group consists of 18 members from 14 different European countries. In autumn 2015 the collective published a jointly written generational and European essay entitled “Who, If Not Us?”, Crowdfunded the printing and distributed 6,000 copies to young people in several European countries. The group was also funded by the Mercator Foundation. The German translation of the book was published in June 2017 by Verlag Droemer Knaur .

Life

After his parents escaped via the Prague embassy , Martin Speer grew up in Heroldsberg . Before his socio-political work, Speer built up the “OCÓO” beverage brand. He studied economics in the United States and Germany. 2015 - 2016 Speer was press spokesman for political scientist Ulrike Guérot . 2016 - 2018 press spokesman and head of the Federal Association of German Foundations.

He lives with his partner in Berlin and Frankfurt.
