The manor house Walkenried was built in 1854 and is now a listed building on the cloister forecourt in Walkenried right next to the Walkenried monastery .

In the manor house of the former monastery domain , one of three information centers of the UNESCO World Heritage Foundation in Harz was opened in July 2020 .

history

The mansion , built in 1854, was used by tenants of the monastery domain as a residential and administrative building until the 1970s . Eventually the community took over the house and sold it to the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) in 2005 . The AWO wanted to set up a youth home there, but the project failed. Interested parties turned up who wanted to set up a hotel in the building . The Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz Foundation (SBK) put a stop to this request and bought the building back in 2016 and extensively renovated it. Originally it was owned by the Braunschweig United Monastery and Study Fund, which today is a sub-fund of the SBK.

The SBK invested an amount in the mid-million range to save the high-profile monument from deterioration. Due to the long vacancy, sponge had already formed in the masonry in some places . So first the roof was re-covered with slate instead of the damaged and not listed concrete tiles. Then the facade was renovated according to the historical plaster and color concept. The natural stone plinth was also cleaned and grouted. The same applies to the outside staircase that leads into the building.

The restorations inside took over five years . The imposing wooden staircase, which leads from the entrance hall through a stately staircase up to the large hall on the upper floor, has been preserved in its original state. In order to meet the current regulations, the curved railing was provided with a steel construction . In the rooms, the restorers discovered historical wallpaper that was preserved over the doors and some of which are visible in selected places. Also noteworthy are friezes that have been painted over so far , showing portraits of wild animals occurring in the Harz Mountains and reappearing.

In the basement is brick - vaulted with the cast-iron beams have been preserved. To make this possible, steel girders were drawn into the ceilings, which were subsequently made invisible again. In the basement there are now cloakrooms and handicapped accessible toilets . They can also be reached with the elevator, which is integrated in a listed building .

The first World Heritage Information Center (WEIZ) of the UNESCO World Heritage Foundation in the Harz region was opened in the Walkenried manor house on July 22, 2020 by Lower Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs, Bernd Althusmann .

Todays use

The World Heritage Information Center was set up on the first floor in July 2020. The 180 square meter exhibition area gives an impression of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rammelsberg mine, the old town of Goslar and the Upper Harz water management . The world heritage in the Harz measures a total area of 220 square kilometers and has numerous museum locations and publicly accessible ground monuments. Further World Heritage information centers will be set up in Goslar (2021) and Clausthal-Zellerfeld (2022). The heart of every World Heritage information center is a 3D landscape model with video projection, which illustrates the process of change in the 3,000-year-old cultural landscape in the western Harz. Humans - nature - technology are brought into a temporal and contextual context. The exhibition can be visited free of charge.

The administration of the Walkenried Monastery Cistercian Museum was housed on the ground floor . The World Heritage Foundation in the Harz also sponsors the monastery complex and the museum. However, the buildings are owned by the Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz Foundation . Furthermore, the Walkenried Tourist Information Office has its new headquarters on the ground floor .

In the basement of the Walkenried manor house, the cloakrooms and handicapped accessible toilets are now housed, which are also used by the neighboring Walkenried monastery .
