Etymology and history

Blackboard on the Goethefelsen

The name comes from a sanctuary that is said to have been here in ancient times and around which many legends are entwined. According to legend, the devil is said to have been led by the residents of Bessungen under a pretext to build a Christian chapel. When he noticed the deception, he is said to have tried in vain to destroy the chapel with a boulder. This boulder, the devil's claw - so called because the traces of the devil's claws should still be visible on it - is a relic from the time when two quarries were operated on Herrgottsberg. From here the stones for the construction of the orangery and the castle came.

The historically guaranteed "Martinskapelle" on the Herrgottsberg was only built in the 15th century and had already disappeared in 1557.

There were already facilities on the Herrgottsberg in the 18th century, perhaps since Goethe and the circle of the sensitive discovered this beautiful place. In the spring of 1800 the existing facility was expanded. Among other things, poplars (Böllen) were planted around the fountain and not far from the forester's house (today "Restaurant Bölle"). Since 1863 the beautification association looked after the Herrgottsberg. Goethe is supposed to write his “Fels-Weihgesang. To Psyche. ”, Which is why the rock is also called“ Goethefelsen ”. On August 27, 1871, Darmstadt and Bessung friends of Goethe inaugurated the memorial plaque that still exists today. After the former mayor Heinz Winfried Sabais had established that the real Goethe rock is further southwest on the Salzlackschneise, a Goethe memorial plaque was also placed there in 1976. This rock is the "Gervinus stone". When Georg Gottfried Gervinus often came to Herrgottsberg with friends during his school days, the sculptor Scholl (probably Johann Baptist Scholl the Elder ) once carved the character “G” into the rock, which can still be seen.

Others

The Goetheteich and a forest spring are located on the southwest slope of the Herrgottsberg . The forest spring was restored as a well in 1978. She once sent a stream to the northwest, which fed the former Bessunger ponds on Klappacher Strasse. Today the forest spring feeds the Goethe pond and the Bessunger gravel pit via the Saubachgraben .

The floor plan of the "Martinskapelle" was reproduced with natural stones.

Today there is an adventure playground on the Herrgottsberg.
