Hauser studied mathematics from 1974 at the University of Innsbruck and from 1977 at the University of Paris-Süd , the École polytechnique and the École normal supérieure . In 1980 he received his doctorate in Paris with the thesis Sur la Déformation Semiuniverselle d'une Singularité Isolée under Bernard Teissier and Adrien Douady and was then assistant at the University of Innsbruck. There he completed his habilitation in 1988 with the work The characterization of singularities through their singular subspace . From 1988 he was associate professor in Innsbruck. He was also a visiting scholar at Brandeis University and Northeastern University in the 1980s . From 1992 to 1994 he was visiting professor at the University of Madrid , 1995 at the University of Barcelona and 1996 at the University of Valladolid , 1997 at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology in Bangkok , 1999 at the University of Seville and 2001 at the Research Institute of Mathematical Sciences (RIMS) in Kyoto . Since 2007 he has been a contract professor at the University of Vienna .

Hauser is known for his work on the resolution of singularities in algebraic geometry . Together with others, he simplified the proof of Heisuke Hironaka for varieties over bodies of characteristic 0 and analyzed it, also with regard to the actual goal of addressing the open problem of the proof for higher-dimensional varieties in positive characteristics. He partially worked with Santiago Encinas. He also dealt with singularity theory in differential geometry and complex analysis of several variables, algebraic analysis and division theorems for power series ideals and differential operators.
