Sacred Heart of Jesus (Emsdetten)
The Catholic parish church Herz Jesu is a listed church building on Karlstrasse in Emsdetten in the Steinfurt district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).
History and architecture
The basilica with three bays , a transept and a retracted choir with a five-eighth closing was built from 1922 to 1924 according to plans by the architect Ludwig Becker . Wilhelm Sunder-Plaßmann expanded it from 1934 to 1935 by adding the monumental, two- tower , cross-bar-like western building with a polygonal entrance porch that was planned but saved in the first construction phase . The Romanesque- oriented building made of irregular sandstone blocks is structured by arched windows. The upper storey is decorated with large lunettes . Ribbed vaults were drawn into the interior . The apse is closed in a semicircle. The equipment from the two construction phases has been partially preserved. A noteworthy Madonna and Child made of wood, it probably dates from the 17th century.
