Herz Frank ( Latvian Hercs Franks , Russian Герц Вульфович Франк - Gerc Vul'fovič Frank ); (Born January 17, 1926 in Ludza , Latvia ; † March 3, 2013 in Jerusalem , Israel ) was a Latvian documentary film director.

life and work

Herz Frank was born into the family of the Jewish photographer, shop owner and operator of an art studio, Wulf Frank. Yiddish was spoken at home , he attended a religious school and a Jewish high school. In July 1941 his family was evacuated to the Soviet Union . In Rewda he graduated from high school. He then attended the Infantry School of the Urals Military District in Kamyshlov and the Sverdlovsk branch of the Allunion Institute for Legal Correspondence. He served as an officer in the Transbaikal Military District. From 1952 to 1954 he worked as a journalist and photographer in Vladimir . In 1955 he returned to Riga , where he worked as a journalist for the newspapers Padomju Jaunatne and Rigas Balss . His professional film career began in the late 1950s in the Riga film studio as a photographer and screenwriter. From 1965 Frank worked as a film director. In 1992 he emigrated to Israel, where he continued to work as a documentary filmmaker. He also published two books and numerous articles.

His films are an expression of his ability to delve into the depths of the human soul and to explore the relationships between people and their environment. The tragedy of being and the fate of humanity were the main themes of his work.

Herz Frank received international awards for 30 of his works. In 1979, the film 10 minutes older was awarded a prize at the Leipzig Documentary Film Festival , and in 1994 it received the Golden Dove for the film There were once seven Simeons . Among the director's best-known works are the films 10 Minutes Older , 235,000,000 Faces and The Last Judgment .

Herz Frank was one of the founders of the “Riga School of Poetic Documentary Film”. In 1975 he published the book The Map of Ptolemy in the Moscow publishing house "Iskusstwo" . In this book the director describes his search for the essence of man in front of the camera.
