The heart-shaped tongue-leaved ( Serapias cordigera ) is a plant from the family of orchids (Orchidaceae).

description

The perennial plant reaches heights of 15 to 50 centimeters. The stem and leaves are mottled purple in the lower section.

The short inflorescence consists of three to ten flowers (rarely up to 20). The lip has two blackish, spreading calluses at the base. The back and front lips overlap. The dark red to black purple front lip is densely hairy and heart-shaped to about the middle . It is between 20 and 29 millimeters long and between 16 and 23 millimeters wide.

Flowering time is from April to May.

Occurrence

The plant prefers macchia , garigues , forests and wet meadows as a location .

The distribution area covers almost the entire Mediterranean area from the Iberian Peninsula to Asia Minor or Tunisia and also southern Central Europe.

Systematics

Five subspecies can be distinguished:

  • Azores tongue tendrils ( Serapias cordigera subsp. Azorica (Schltr.) Soó ): It occurs on all Azores islands except Flores and Corvo at altitudes between 200 and 920 meters above sea level.
  • Serapias cordigera subsp. cordigera (Syn .: Serapias lorenziana H.Baumann & Künkele ): It occurs in the Mediterranean region and from the Iberian Peninsula and from southern Central Europe to the Aegean Sea and northwestern Turkey at altitudes between 0 and 1000 meters above sea level.
  • Pantelleria tongues ( Serapias cordigera subsp. Cossyrensis ( B. Baumann & H.Baumann) Kreutz , Syn .: Serapias cossyrensis B. Baumann & H.Baumann ): It occurs only on Pantelleria on volcanic ash at altitudes between 200 and 870 meters above sea level .
  • Cretan tongues ( Serapias cordigera subsp. Cretica B. Baumann & H.Baumann ): It occurs in Crete on slate or sandstone at altitudes between 70 and 700 meters above sea level.
  • Serapias cordigera subsp. lucana R.Lorenz & VARomano : This subspecies, which was first described in 2014, only occurs in Italy.
