The Herzoglich Sachsen-Meiningen Feldjäger-Korps formed the gendarmerie of the Duchy of Sachsen-Meiningen from 1827 to 1918 .

history

Foundation and tasks

The Feldjägerkorps was founded on March 10, 1827. It was part of the Saxon-Meiningian military contingent of the German Confederation . Presumably, due to the military convention with the Kingdom of Prussia , the corps was converted into a civil institution with a still military character in 1867 ; Details are not yet known.

The Feldjägerkorps was probably immediately after the November Revolution 1918 and the abdication of Duke Bernhard III. renamed and integrated into the gendarmerie of the now Free State of Saxony-Meiningen . Here too, details are unknown.

Similar to other gendarmeries in the German Confederation, the main task of the corps was to maintain public security, peace and order and to monitor the existing laws and ordinances. In addition, the judicial and administrative authorities should be supported. There is evidence that until 1867 the military police were also responsible for customs and taxation .

Outline 1867

According to the Saxon-Meiningian “court and state calendar of 1867”, the corps consisted of 46 men, which was divided into the Feldjägerkommando as well as three gendarmerie brigades and six so-called sections. Brigade commanders were officers , section leaders Oberjäger. Since an auditor is also mentioned, the corps members were still subject to military jurisdiction at this point in time :

  • Feldjägerkommando ( Major Adolf Kaiser)

Uniformity

Around 1840 the military police, like the Saxon-Meiningian infantry, were uniformed with a dark green collar and dark gray winter and white summer trousers and wore a black shako with a green and white cockade . The skirt folds and advances for the gendarmerie were orange, as was the edging of the saddlecloth for the service horses.

Later the uniform was modified several times and a tunic and the spiked bonnet were introduced. This uniform should have been worn unchanged until 1918.
