Hesperaloe engelmannii (English common name "Engelmann's False Yucca") is a species of the genus Hesperaloe in the agave family . The epithet of the species honors Georg Theodor Engelmann .
description
Hesperaloe engelmannii has no trunk and forms clumps of 50 to 120 cm in diameter. The falling, variable green leaves are 100 to 150 cm long. The short, white to gray, marginal fibers are arranged irregularly.
The inflorescence becomes 2 to 2.5 m high. The tubular pink or salmon-colored flowers are 30 to 40 mm long. In contrast to Hesperaloe parviflora , the plants are significantly larger. The flowering period extends from April to June.
Hesperaloe engelmannii is in Central Europe to minus 12 ° C frost-hardy .
Distribution and systematics
Hesperaloe engelmannii is common in the United States on the Edwards Plateau in the state of Texas in a limited area in grasslands on flat hills, under oak trees in bushes. The species grows in association with Yucca pallida , agave species and various cactus species.
The valid description by Engelbert Krauskopf (1820–1881) was published in 1878. A synonym is Hesperaloe parviflora var. Engelmannii (Krauskopf) Trel.
