Hesperaloe parviflora is a species of the genus Hesperaloe in the agave family . The epithet of the species means "small-flowered". English common names are "Red Hesperaloe" and "Red Yucca".

description

Hesperaloe parviflora forms clumps 50 to 120 cm in diameter. The twisted, variable, flexible, finely lanceolate, linear green, thin leaves are 30 to 120 cm long and 1 to 2 cm wide. The short white to gray twisted edge fibers are 3 to 6 cm long.

The inflorescence becomes 1 to 3 m high. It is usually branched in the upper half. The tubular to oblong, bell-shaped, pink- red , salmon-colored (yellow, cream-colored in cultivation) flowers are 25 to 35 mm long. As with Hesperaloe campanulata, the flowering period extends from April to October.

The woody capsules, which are 30 to 40 mm long and 25 to 30 mm wide when ripe, are ovoid to oblong. The black seeds are 9 to 10 mm long, 6 to 8 mm wide and 1 mm thick.

Distribution and systematics

Hesperaloe parviflora is located in Mexico in the state of Coahuila and in the United States in the state of Texas on the Edwards Plateau in desert areas and chaparral zones at an altitude of 500 to 2000 m. The species grows together with Dasylirion texanum and various agave and cactus species. The caespitose Hesperaloe parviflora subsp. parviflora has the largest distribution area of ​​the genus.

The valid description by John Merle Coulter under the name Hesperaloe parviflora was published in 1894. Yucca parviflora Torr is a synonym .

The species is frost hardy in Germany down to minus 18 ° C. Starr reports on natural hybrids with Hesperaloe funifera and Hesperaloe nocturna .

There are two subspecies:

  • Hesperaloe parviflora subsp. bechtoldii Hochstätter : It occurs in northwest Coahuila.
  • Hesperaloe parviflora subsp. parviflora : It occurs in southwest Texas.
