Hessian State Office for Historical Regional Studies

The Hessian State Office for Historical Regional Studies (HLGL) in Marburg is an office in the business area of the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art . It conducts research on the country's history since the Middle Ages, also from a comparative perspective.

history

The establishment took place in 1920 outside the public administration. The research on the Historical Atlas of Hesse and Nassau provided an important impetus. This project was commissioned by the Historical Commission for Hesse and Waldeck and initially headed by Edmund Ernst Stengel . Since 1926 the institute for historical regional studies existed in Hesse and Nassau at the Philipps University of Marburg . Stengel's successor, Theodor Mayer , was the driving force behind transforming the institute into a state authority since 1938. Between 1942 and 1953 the organization was sponsored by the Kassel District Association . Then it was converted into a direct state authority in the area of the Ministry of Culture.

The head of the state office was Fred Schwind from 1974 to 1991 ; Ursula Braasch-Schwersmann has been the department manager since 1995 . Ulrich Reuling and Holger Th. Gräf were or are employees .

tasks

The state office has the task of developing and conveying the basics of the history of Hesse from the beginning in the early Middle Ages to the present. In the context of supraregional research, the institution operates and scientifically promotes historical regional studies in the area of today's federal state. It examines the country's history, which is very different for historical reasons, and works in the field of education. For this purpose, a university professorship for Hessian regional history is planned from 2020/21.

The State Office communicates its research work to specialist circles, to young academics and to the general public. It publishes in print and online: in its own series of publications and via the State Historical Information System of Hesse (LAGIS), in which scientifically proven information on various aspects of Hessian history is made available on the Internet.

The Historical Atlas of Hesse has been published in a series of partial deliveries since 1960. A total of 53 sheets with 79 cards were published. The project was completed in 1984 with the accompanying text and explanatory volume. The cooperation between regional historiography and cartography will be continued with the Hessian city atlas project. Since 1962, the research center for historical regional studies of Central Germany has been attached to the State Office as a separate department, which was largely built up under Walter Schlesinger . The department's library contains more than 48,000 volumes.
