Heterometrus liangi is a Vietnamese scorpion in the Scorpionidae family . The species was described after specimens from the Chinese pet trade .

description

Heterometrus liangi is a rather small member of the genus Heterometrus with a length of 82 to 98 millimeters . The entire body has a reddish black basic color. The comb organ is yellowish in color and has 16 to 18 teeth in males and 15 to 16 in females. The sternum is pentagonal and longer than it is wide. The telson is black to reddish brown, elongated and hairy. The poison sting is shorter than the poison bladder, reddish brown at the base and black at the top.

Heterometrus liangi is particularly similar in shape to the chelae of the species Heterometrus laoticus , which, however, becomes larger and dorsally smooth surfaces of the chelae, carapace and mesosoma . Heterometrus liangi has a granular surface with pronounced granules. From the also very similar petersii Heterometrus differs Heterometrus liangi in that in male and female animals of the movable finger of the scissors is formed the same. In the males of Heterometrus petersii , the mobile finger on the gripping surface in the middle has a pronounced tooth, which is missing in the female scorpions of this species. In addition, the color of Heterometrus liangi is a reddish black while Heterometrus petersii is a greenish black color.

distribution

The terra typica of Heterometrus liangi is located in the south of Vietnam , in the province of Tây Ninh . In a more recent publication on the scorpion fauna of Vietnam, the type location was given more precisely with the district Tân Biên without further explanation ( 11 ° 36 ′ 0 ″  N , 105 ° 54 ′ 0 ″  E ).

Systematics

Initial description

The first description was made by the Chinese arachnologists Ming-Sheng Zhu and Xiao-Feng Yang in 2007 on the occasion of an investigation of scorpions from the Chinese pet trade. The researchers' interest was aroused by the fact that at the beginning of the 21st century, large dark scorpions were offered as pets under common names in Chinese pet stores and under various scientific species names on the Internet . Southern China was regularly given as their origin. Ming-Sheng Zhu bought some scorpions for sale in pet stores in May 2006 from Yi-Ming Liang, an importer of scorpions from Nanning, Guangxi Autonomous Region , southern China. Liang's business records revealed that the scorpions came from the Vietnamese province of Tây Ninh, and that Liang imported more than 350,000 scorpions from there between October 2005 and February 2006 alone.

The scorpions that Liang acquired belonged to various taxa , including three species of the genus Heterometrus. One species was identified as Heterometrus petersii , while a second was Heterometrus liangi .

Type copies

A male specimen was determined as the holotype , plus two male and two female paratypes. The types are located in the Hebei University Museum in Baoding , Hebei Province . According to the information in Liang's business records, the Vietnamese province of Tây Ninh was given as terra typica . The date of the discovery is not known.

etymology

The species name honors Yi-Ming Liang , the animal dealer from Nanning, Guangxi Autonomous Region, who had sold Zhu the specimens of Heterometrus liangi on which the species description is based .

toxicology

The poison from Heterometrus liangi activated the CDK inhibitor 1 and the caspase CASP3 in a laboratory test in a line of human cells from esophageal cancer . There is hope that cancer therapy will be able to induce cell death in such cancer cells in a targeted manner.
