Hewittia malabarica is the only plant species of the genus Hewittia from the family of wind plants (Convolvulaceae). It occurs in tropical regions of Africa and Asia ; in Jamaica she is a neophyte .

description

Hewittia malabarica are twisting or prostrate, perennial, herbaceous plants that reach heights of 1 to 2 m. The shoot axes are more or less finely haired, and roots often form at the nodes . The leaves are on 1 to 6 cm long petioles , the leaf blades are egg-shaped, 3 to 10 cm long and 3 to 8 cm wide. They are covered with adjacent trichomes or almost hairless, occasionally they are also dotted with glands. The leaf margin is ciliate, entire or the leaf is multi-lobed, the leaf base is heart-shaped, spear-shaped or cut off. To the front, the leaves are pointed, prickly or with a long tip.

The plants bloom all year round and also produce fruit all year round. The inflorescences usually consist of only one flower . These stand on 1.5 to 10 cm long inflorescence stalks , the bracts are elongated-lanceolate, pointed towards the front, finely hairy and 0.7 to 1.5 cm long. The flower stalk is 2 to 4 mm long. The hermaphrodite, radially symmetrical flowers are five-fold. The five sepals are irregularly shaped, finely hairy on the outward-facing side. The outer three sepals are broadly ovate, 0.9 to 1.5 cm long and 0.6 to 0.9 cm wide. The inner two sepals are elongated-lanceolate and slightly shorter. The crown is 2 to 2.5 cm long, pale yellow or whitish with a purple center. A strip with dense, fine hairs runs along the middle of the individual petals. The stamens are 9 mm long, the filaments are finely haired at the base, the anthers are egg-shaped-triangular. The upper ovary is hairy shaggy.

The pressed-in spherical capsule fruits are surrounded by the constant and expanding calyx. They have a diameter of 8 to 10 mm, are finely haired and contain a maximum of four seeds. The seeds are dull black, ovate-triangular and 4 to 6 mm long. The hilum is finely haired, the rest of the seed surface is hairless.

The chromosome number is .
