Hidalgo is a city in Hidalgo County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in southern Texas on US Highway 281 , on the border with Mexico on the Rio Grande , across from Reynosa , is about 100 km to the east from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 11.5 km², of which 0.2 km² of water surface is.
history
The first settlers in this area were members of the colony of José de Escandón , founder and governor of the colony Nuevo Santander in New Spain in 1749 . The names of the place at that time were La Habitación , Rancho San Luis , and San Luisito . In 1852 John Young , a Scot, who renamed the place Edinburgh, settled here . In 1885 the place was renamed again to its current name. Until 1915 troops of the US Army and the Texas Rangers were also stationed here.
Demographic data
According to the 2009 census , 13,956 people live here in 1,747 households and 1,593 families. The population density was 649.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 97.7% White, 0.1% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 15.45% other ethnic groups. About 1.90% were mixed race and 97.75% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,747 households, 61.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 66.1% of them were married couples living together. 21.0% were single mothers and 8.8% were non-families. 8.1% of all households were single households and 4.7% had people living there who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 4.19 and the average family size was 4.43.
39.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 11.6% 18 to 24, 28.0% 25 to 44, 14.7% 45 to 64, and 6.6% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 88.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 82.4 men.
The median income for a household is 22,631 (2009) USD , and the median income for a family 20,357 USD. Males had a median income of $ 16,238 versus $ 13,577 for females. The per capita income was $ 5,849. 44.3% of the population and 41.4% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 51.2% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 45.5% were 65 or older.

The Hidalgo Early College High School is one of the best high schools in the United States. It has 3,395 students, 99.6% of whom are of Latin American descent. Hidalgo Early College High School is the winner of the State Championship in football and women's basketball.
