Hieracium brevipilum is a plant from the genus of hawkweed ( Hieracium ) within the family of Compositae (Asteraceae). It occurs only in the US states of Arizona and New Mexico .

Vegetative characteristics

Hieracium brevipilum is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 25 to 65 centimeters. The upright stems are covered with fine hairs 1 to 3 millimeters long and have a glandular and star-like hairy base.

At the base of the stem there are three to six, sometimes more basal leaves , while there are also three to six leaves on the stem. The leaf blade is at a length from 3.5 to 12 centimeters and a width from 1 to 1.8 centimeters-oblanceolate to lanceolate with wedge-shaped to Spreitenbasis truncated and rounded or tapered Spreitenspitze. The margins of the spread are whole. Both the underside and the upper side of the leaf are covered with fine hairs 0.5 to 1.5 millimeters long, but they can also be bald.

Generative characteristics

The flowering time is in August. The panicle-like total inflorescence usually contains six to ten, occasionally more cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The inflorescence shaft is hairy glandular. The at a diameter from 1 to 1.1 centimeters to bell-shaped cylindrical involucre containing 9 to 13 glandular hairs on the underside of bracts . The flower heads contain 15 to 25 ray florets. The yellowish white ray florets are about 0.8 inches long.

The achenes are jug-shaped with a length of 5 to 6 millimeters. The pappus consists of 50 to 60 white to straw-colored bristle hairs.

Occurrence

Hieracium brevipilum is only found in the US states of Arizona and New Mexico .

It thrives in pine forests at altitudes of 2300 to 3000 meters .

Taxonomy

It was first described as Hieracium brevipilum in 1882 by Edward Lee Greene in Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club , Volume 9, Number 5, Page 64. A synonym for Hieracium brevipilum Greene is Hieracium fendleri var. Mogollense A.Gray .
