description

Vegetative characteristics

Hieracium greenei is an herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 45 centimeters. The upright stems are usually covered with star-like hair, more rarely with fine and coarse 0.1 to 0.3 cm long hair and have a mostly dense star-like hairy base.

At the base of the stem there are five to eight, occasionally more basal leaves , while there are two to five or more leaves on the stem. The leaf blade is at a length from 3.5 to 15 centimeters and a width of 0.8 to 2.5 centimeters to spatulate upside-lanceolate with more or less wedge-shaped Spreitenbasis and rounded or tapered Spreitenspitze. The margins of the spread are entire or rarely serrated. Both the underside and the upper side of the leaf are covered with 0.2 to 0.3 centimeters long, star-like and glandular hairs.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from July to September. The panicle-like total inflorescence usually contains 3 to 50, occasionally more cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The inflorescence stem is dense to sparsely covered with star-like hair. The involucre , which is cylindrical with a diameter of 0.9 to 1.2 centimeters, contains seven to eight, sometimes more on the underside, star-like hairy bracts . The flower heads contain 4 to 15 or more ray florets. The yellow ray florets are 0.8 to 1 centimeter long.

The achenes are columnar with a length of 0.4 to 0.5 centimeters. The pappus consists of 60 to 80 white or straw-colored bristle hairs, which are 0.7 to 0.9 centimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The natural range of Hieracium greenei is in the western United States. It includes the US states of California and Oregon .

Hieracium greenei thrives at altitudes of 900 to 2400 meters where it grows in clearings in pine forests and along serpentines .

Taxonomy
