Vegetative characteristics

Hieracium gronovii is an herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 80 centimeters. The upright stems are usually covered with fine and rough, more rarely with star-like 0.2 to 0.4 cm long hair and usually have a star-like hairy base.

At the base of the stem there are no or up to two, occasionally more basal leaves , while there are three to twelve or more leaves on the stem. The leaf blade is at a length of 2-9 cm and a width of 1 to 5 centimeter elliptical about obovate to reversed-lanceolate with wedge-shaped or rounded, sometimes more or less the Henbit Spreitenbasis and rounded or tapered Spreitenspitze. The margins of the spread are whole. Both the underside and the upper side of the leaf are covered with fine, coarse hairs that are 0.2 to 0.4 centimeters long. There are also star hairs on the underside.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from March to October. The thyrsus-like total inflorescence usually contains 5 to 50 cup-shaped partial inflorescences . The inflorescence stem is covered with both glandular and star-like hairs. The involucre , which is cylindrical to bell-shaped with a diameter of 0.7 to 1 centimeter, contains 12 to 15, occasionally more on the underside, bald or star-like, more rarely glandular hairy bracts with rounded, pointed or pointed tips. The flower heads contain 12 to 20 or more ray florets. The yellow ray florets are 0.8 to 0.9 centimeters long.

The achenes are jug-shaped with a length of 0.35 to 0.45 centimeters. The pappus consists of 40 or more straw-colored bristle hairs, which are around 0.5 centimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The natural range of Hieracium gronovii extends from western Canada and the western part of the USA via Mexico to Central America .

Hieracium gronovii thrives at altitudes of 30 to 600 meters where it grows in clearings in pine forests and pine-oak forests, in swamps and on sandy surfaces.
