Hieronymus Besnecker SOCist (baptized April 22, 1678 in Eger ; † June 14, 1749 in Osek ) was a Bohemian Cistercian and from 1726 to 1749 abbot of the Osek monastery .

Life

Besnecker was born in Eger in April 1678 as the son of the citizen, town piper and town musician Andreas Besnecker and his wife Maria, nee. Brunner was born in Prague and was baptized under the first name Hans Adam on April 22, 1678 in the parish church of St. Nicholas.

Besnecker, who took the first name Hieronymus, was professor of theology in Ossegg (Osek) and Prague and provost in Altbrünn before he was elected abbot in 1726. He beautified the surroundings of the monastery by setting up the baroque parks (still preserved today, but neglected), the abbot garden, the convent garden and the novice garden, probably based on plans by Octavian Broggio . In addition, the branch churches in Wissoczan , Vtelno and Ugest were newly built . He had a guest wing for foreign clergy added to the provost building in Maria-Ratschitz .

Besnecker's reign was also marked by the War of the Austrian Succession , which demanded high war contributions from the monastery and the repeated billeting of soldiers who also had to be fed. Before the advancing Prussian troops, the abbot avoided Prague in 1744, but was soon able to return. In 1748 he received confirmation of the monastery privileges from the imperial court in Vienna.
